“The measure of an exceptional therapist or counsellor, is one’s preparedness
to never ask of a client what you are not willing to do yourself…”

Professional Supervision – Wayfarer Approach

I offer both individual and group supervision for those working in Social Work, Health & Community Services, Psychotherapy and Counselling settings.  The Wayfarer approach to supervision draws on the same ethos, values and approaches as my psychotherapy with clients, that being; existential-phenomenol0gical, gestalt and person- centred philosophies and frameworks, art therapy and group work processes.

My approach to supervision is one of ‘Reflective Practice’ as opposed to case presentation and formulation, though these methods may be part of the consolidating process for some people.  The essence, underlying principles and values of a more reflective style of supervision are that of understanding the function, role, values, drive and dynamic the therapist brings to the therapeutic relationship as most important, rather than emphasising and solely examining the presenting issues of the client.  My approach to Supervision therefore, values the importance of the therapists personal development, self-understanding, healing, growth and insight into how their own values, experiences, patterns and counter-transference influence the inter-subjective space of the therapy encounter.  It relies on an overall understanding and value of ‘Relationship’ as the core underlying principle of effective therapeutic practice.

My supervision groups likewise, aim to provide a safe space for professionals working in healthcare and counselling settings who are seeking more depth, meaning, creativity and self-reflection from their supervision process and who wish to explore practice issues from a relational model. Hence, all supervision groups are reflective and inter-personal in nature. They are suited to those professionals who wish to push the boundaries of their practice and in doing so, feel open to challenging themselves and their therapeutic work with others, through a supervision process that emphasises relational and intersubjective practice and creative exploration. Some specific groups may draw directly on the principles of Irvin Yalom’s ‘here and now’, interactional group work process while others are more fluid and creative.  Either way, the Wayfarer style of Supervision is a dynamic group process designed to equally support and challenge participants in their ways of being with themselves in the context of their work practice and to explore new and inspiring ways to understand themselves and their work with others.  Therefore, it requires participants to bring a curiosity, transparency, honesty and a passion for personal growth and learning and an openness to explore topics, patterns and themes in the context of their own personal experiencing.

Please Note:  Availability of Supervision Groups depends on interest and demand.  Please contact me for further information regarding upcoming groups.
