The Therapeutic Relationship

While there are a number of factors that influence therapeutic outcomes and success, research shows that the most critical predictor, by far, is the quality of the therapeutic relationship between therapist and client. And, as with all relationships, commitment is a vital value in making that relationship work.

As your therapist, I am strongly committed to you and your therapy process. I greatly value the therapeutic relationship knowing it is the building of a genuine relationship based on trust, empathy and safety that is essential to effective therapy and in facilitating real and sustained change.  I work hard to foster a sense of trust, openness and safety with my clients. I value integrity, honesty, consistency, commitment and empathy as the hallmarks of good therapeutic practice.  I trust and believe that you are the expert of your own life and master of your journey.  I see my role as one of holding, facilitation and co-creation as I walk alongside you, offering companioning as you navigate, process and make sense of the experiences we explore together.  Whether you’re seeking individual psychotherapy, group therapy or personal development work, a committed, open, honest and respectful relationship is vital to our work together.

Once you have met me, and if you choose to embark on your therapy pathway with Wayfarer, all I ask of you in return is that you commit to yourself and your own therapeutic process with a spirit of openness, curiosity and courage.

Session Cancellations & Changes

I run a relatively small practice and strongly value quality service over quantity.   Part of that quality service means ensuring I can provide prompt, continuity of care to you and thoroughness in terms of presence, time and space.   And if you so choose, it means making a commitment to offering you, a regular time and date for your sessions that becomes your ‘space’ depending on the frequency you choose to attend.  By reserving this space for you I am seeking to communicate that both you and your process are worthy of consistency, presence, and attending.  I will endeavour to avoid time changes and cancellations unless absolutely necessary, but in exceptional circumstances, where I need to change or cancel your specific time, I will always give you as much notice as possible.  I place a strong emphasis on the values of relationship and commitment and these values underpin my practice and work ethic, and are key to the success of your therapeutic outcomes.  Making a commitment to your journey and therapy process is paramount to our work together.  Therefore, if you choose to embark on your journey with Wayfarer, I ask only, that you in turn, commit to your own therapy process, and likewise avoid last minute changes and cancellations to ensure continuity of your therapy work.  In situations where you are unable to attend your session, wish to change the time or take a break, I request you do so by giving me as much notice as possible.   I understand that sometimes there are emergencies and unforeseen circumstances that result in last minute cancellations and I will always show discretion, compassion and understanding in these situations, and where possible, offer you an alternative time within the week.  With the exception of these unforeseen emergencies, my general policy is; any cancellation of a session with less than 24 hours notice, I kindly request you honour your payment in full to cover the loss of that session.  Frequent cancellations with less than 48 hours notice may incur an $80 cancellation fee – Thankyou for your understanding.
